Values are what accepted by society.
With the coming of globalization the society is changing & so are the values.
And thus the value system that was applicable to previous era societies is no more applicable now and hence we can never say whether it is degrading or upgrading :)
Though we have lost many good values over time we also have gained many new good one also like:
1) abandoning child marriages
2) allowing widow remarriage
3) becoming more open to globalization
etc..
